Led by Lionel Bovier, Director of MAMCO Geneva, this discussion brings together Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, whose collaborative practice has, since the late 1990s, examined the mechanisms of history, memory and representation, particularly in the Lebanese and, more broadly, Middle Eastern context.
At the heart of their work lies a reflection on traces — whether material, archival or imaginary — left by conflicts, displacement and historical ruptures. Rather than seeking to restore a stabilised memory, Hadjithomas and Joreige develop dispositifs in which doubt, incompleteness and speculation become critical tools. Their works set real documents against fictional narratives, revealing the fragility of historical constructions and the porous boundary between facts and interpretations.
By combining a rigorous investigative approach with an openly embraced narrative sensibility, the duo proposes an artistic practice that engages the viewer in an active relationship with history. Their work invites us to consider memory not as a fixed inheritance, but as a shifting field, continually reconfigured by the gestures, images and narratives that attempt to grasp it.
This event forms part of a series of public conversations organised by the Amis du MAMCO, aimed at both newcomers and informed audiences. The format encourages direct exchange with the artists through discussions moderated by the museum team and supported by educational materials, offering a privileged opportunity to discover or deepen an understanding of their artistic universe.
