Boîte en valise, 1999

Heimo Zobernig (Mauthen, Austria, 1958) contributed a piece to MAMCO in answer to a question asked by the museum: How can Duchamp's Boîte en valise be presented? Zobernig’s answer was an amused and ironic homage. The cover to the only issue of the 1921 New York Dada newspaper created with Man Ray was hung on
the wall. It showed a reproduction of the bottle of perfume Belle Haleine, eau de voilette [Beautiful Breath:
Veil Water] and the Témoins oculistes [Oculist Witnesses]. On the floor in one corner of the room a sound system played a recording that Zobernig had created as a contribution to an Austrian sound station show presented on the centennial of Duchamp’s birth (Ohne Titel, 1987). The viewer learned through the recording that the artist had tried to contact Duchamp, but had ended up with Rrose Sélavy … One of the most important things she told him, in a voice from beyond the grave, was that, “We the dead have great power over the living.”
