To close the Sylvia Sleigh and Refaire collection exhibitions, the MAMCO partners with Les Cinémas du Grütli and the Une autre histoire film club for a special evening dedicated to Věra Chytilová (1929–2014). A leading figure of the Czechoslovak New Wave, this director and screenwriter established a free, irreverent, and deeply feminist cinema, echoing the themes of gender code subversion explored at the Musée Rath.
After starting in fashion and design, Chytilová joined the FAMU in Prague before revolutionizing her country’s cinema. The program highlights two recently restored featurettes:
Le Plafond (Strop, Czechoslovakia, 1961, 42 min)
Inspired by the artist’s personal experience as a model, this film follows Marta, a young woman seeking emancipation amidst photo shoots and urban wanderings. Its direction, close to cinéma vérité, already announces the formal freedom of the Czechoslovak New Wave.
Un sac de puces (Pytel blech, Czechoslovakia, 1962, 42 min)
In a textile factory boarding school, teenagers live between constraints and dreams of escape. Through the subjective gaze of a newcomer, Chytilová deploys striking visual inventiveness to depict daily tensions and the desire for freedom.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Stéphanie Barbey, moderated by Charlotte Ducos, to explore Chytilová’s legacy and its resonances with contemporary creation.
