This monograph devoted to Tishan Hsu brings together and analyses more than four decades of practice by an artist whose work has occupied a singular position in the history of contemporary art since the 1980s. At the intersection of painting, sculpture, and image-based technologies, his work consistently examines the relationships between body, surface, screen, and technical environment.

This publication represents the most comprehensive study of the artist to date. It extends the retrospective of Tishan Hsu presented at MAMCO in 2024, in partnership with the Secession in Vienna. The volume brings together texts by Lionel Bovier, Elisabeth Jobin, and Pamela M. Lee, offering complementary readings of the work that are at once historical, critical, and theoretical.

Their contributions trace the evolution of Tishan Hsu’s practice from his early works of the 1980s to his most recent productions, while highlighting the conceptual coherence of his approach. They situate his work within the artistic, intellectual, and technological contexts of its time, and demonstrate how it anticipates and sheds light on issues that have since become central, particularly those related to regimes of images, digital dispositifs, and the transformation of embodied experience.

Richly illustrated, the publication gives a central place to artworks, exhibition views, and archival documents. It offers an in-depth visual and analytical exploration of Tishan Hsu’s practice, making it possible to grasp the continuity of his formal and conceptual investigations over the long term. Through the scope of its documentation and the critical perspective it develops, this monograph establishes itself as an essential reference for understanding the significance and contemporary relevance of the work of the artist.
