In 1993, while Martin Kippenberger was visiting Michael Würthle on Syros, one of the Greek islands in the Cyclades group, he discovered an unfinished building in an architectural style broadly reminiscent of the temples of antiquity. He decided to make a museum out of it, MOMAS, and to become its director. The museum had neither walls nor collections, but for three years, artists were invited
to it and openings attracting up to a dozen people were organized. In addition to the ephemeral works exhibited there, the museum existed mainly as a project, both critical and utopian. The artists invited were Hubert Kiecol, Ulrich Strothjohann, Christopher Wool (who most notably created the museum’s typographical design), Stephen Prina, Christopher Williams, Cosima von Bonin, Johannes Wohnseifer, Michel Majerus, and Heimo Zobernig. MAMCO has more than thirty prints and drawings related to MOMAS, in particular the building’s architectural drawings, often enhanced with paint and stickers, as well
as posters, photographs, and two sculptures, including
a model of the site made by Kippenberger.
