The studio by Sarkis (1938, Istanbul) installed on the first floor in 1994 is the last surviving trace of the wooden huts that divided the rooms when the museum first opened. For the artist, it is a “occasional workshop” where he spends a day of work once or twice a year. What can be seen inside the workshop is not the creation of a particular work—no brushes or paint tubes are in sight—but the accretion of work that has accumulated, evolved, and been exposed to its own renewal over the years. Works are hung, moved around, and sometimes withdrawn, as they converse with each other. In this way, L’Atelier depuis 19380 provides a synthesis of Sarkis’ artistic activity, while including some biographical allusions. The number 19380 refers to his year of birth, and the passage of years is acknowledged by an additional small watercolor hung on the wall, in a pattern that echoes the colored squares in the window.
