Parsifal…,1989–1990

In Parsifal 1882 – 38,969,364,735, Rodney Graham (1949, Vancouver) deconstructed the score of Wagner’s opera by introducing a complex mathematical formula that determined how the orchestra would play it. Each instrument had to continue to repeat its part according to a preset code, until the whole orchestra was once again synchronized at the beginning of the first bar. The original opera premiered at the Bayreuth Festival on July 26, 1882, at 5 pm. If played in its entirety, Graham calculated that his transformed opera would end on June 18, 38,969,364,735, i.e., more than 38 billion years later. The majesty of the Wagnerian drama becomes lost in the mathematical sequence that snuffs out any sentimentality or allegiance to the original score. One room presented the twelve volumes of the new score in two glass cases designed at Graham’s request by the Belgian artist Jan Vercruysse. Three photographs from the Cedar Trees series provided an upside-down backdrop for this reinvented Parsifal, while pieces of the orchestral music played in the background.
