Siste Viator (Stop Traveller), 1993

A room on the first floor displayed a 1993 work by Allen Ruppersberg (1944, Cleveland). It was conceived as a memorial project for the Dutch city of Arnhem in 1993.
In September 1944, over nine days of battle, 8,000 Dutch, British, Polish, and German soldiers died in Arnhem. Ruppersberg reprinted the twenty most-read books of the time in the four countries concerned to recreate an intimate, intellectual history of the soldiers’ lives. The books were placed in a worker’s trailer typical of prewar Holland. Memorabilia such as film posters and bookplates with
the names of the dead soldiers were also placed in the trailer. Only one book per language was reprinted in full, the others contained nothing but blank pages, evoking the lost memories of the men killed.
  • Project installed in collaboration with the Arnhem Library
