Contemporary art began to take root in Geneva in the late 1960s thanks to the determination of artists and other players on the creative scene. In this respect, the city holds a unique place in the Swiss institutional landscape: unlike German-speaking cities, and even Lausanne, the initial impetus for contemporary artistic creation came from neither established museums nor political circles. “Geneva is still living through its cultural prehistory,” wrote journalist Jean- Jacques Roth in the Tribune de Genève in 1977.
